Welcoming Our New DUG Leaders: Layla Ahmed, Inari Jade Barrett and Dorra Omrani

Layla Ahmed is a junior studying Comparative Literature and International & Public Affairs. She has a particular interest in exploring the ways in which Algerian literature envisions a decolonial country, examines issues in its postcolonial formation and explores the dynamics between Algeria and France from political, economic, social and linguistic perspectives. Layla is additionally intrigued by the role of grassroots organizations in social movements in the MENA region and how journalism has been used to support or undermine the demands and views of everyday people, especially during times of revolution. At Brown, she is on the E-Board of the Brown Muslim Student Association and the Women’s Health Advocacy Group. She also tutors for BRYTE and is a section editor at The College Hill Independent (The Indy).

Inari Jade Barrett is a junior concentrating in International & Public Affairs on the governance and policy track. Inari’s interest in Middle East studies originated from her love of Arabic. After taking MES classes that actually made her eager to create discussion posts, she knew it was time to declare. Inari has contributed greatly to the Center for Middle East studies providing event support as well as designing and formatting the bi-weekly CMES e-newsletter. Inari is eager to create more space for connection with fellow concentrators when she returns from Jordan in the Spring.

Dorra Omrani is a senior studying Middle East Studies and Biology. Having witnessed the Arab Spring in Tunisia in 2010, she has interests in the study of North African history, revolution and politics. Her recent coursework has sparked a new interest in the use of different mediums, such as film and graffiti, in historical storytelling and de-colonial efforts. At Brown, she serves on the E-Board of the Arab Society, and is an editor for the Brown Undergraduate Journal of Middle East Studies (BUJMES).
