Center for Middle East Studies

Get Involved

Whatever your connection to the Middle East or your academic focus, there are variety of ways to get involved!

The Center for Middle East Studies offers a space for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary conversations and networking with students and faculty from multiple departments. Opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to build and engage with our community are listed below.

Undergraduate Students

Take Middle East–related courses, including language courses in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish.
Students often supplement their coursework at Brown by studying abroad in the region.
Do you want to read and discuss a Middle East–related topic, but don't see any courses on it? Find at least two other people to meet at least three times a semester, and CMES will support you!
If you are writing an Honors Thesis or a Capstone project related to the Middle East, CMES can support research travel up to $1,000 (with winter and summer deadlines).
Contribute as an author or editor to the Brown Undergraduate Journal of Middle East Studies (BUJMES), an undergraduate-operated interdisciplinary journal featuring academic and creative work on the Middle East/South West Asia and North Africa.
Work with MES-affiliated faculty on research and curricular design. Remember that MES-related UTRAs may not be listed under "Middle East Studies," so search the SPRINT|UTRA Opportunities List for individual MES faculty by name or by department.
MES concentrators writing a senior honors thesis can apply for this fellowship, receiving additional funds and serving as an ambassador for the concentration.
If you have taken (or are planning to take) a number of Middle East–related courses, consider concentrating in Middle East Studies. Questions about the concentration? Contact Alex Winder (alex_winder@brown.ed), MES Director of Undergraduate Studies
Get involved with the MES Departmental Undergraduate Group (DUG). If you want a student perspective on the MES concentration, to meet other students interested in the Middle East, or want to find out about student-organized events (or help organize one yourself), the DUG offers an easy way to get connected.

Graduate Students

Join the Middle East Studies Graduate Student Association. MESGSA is run by graduate students, for graduate students to organize social and academic events and build community across departments and disciplines.
Apply for a Research Travel Award of up to $1,500 to support research related to the Middle East (conducted in the region or elsewhere).
Start a reading group on a topic of your choice. Find at least two other people to meet at least three times a semester, and receive CMES support.
Present research at the Middle East Colloquium, a lunchtime series for members of Brown’s MES community to discuss works in progress.

Faculty

Present your work at the Middle East Colloquium, a lunchtime series for members of Brown’s MES community to discuss their work in progress.
Start a reading group with undergraduate and/or graduate students on a topic of your choice. Reading groups should have at least three members and should meet at least three times a semester.
Organize a Middle East–related event with CMES sponsorship or funding.
Propose a year-long Middle East–related initiative with other faculty, graduate students and/or undergraduate students. Research initiatives provide the opportunity for sustained collaboration across discipline and rank and may entail organizing a conference or workshop, a speaker series, an exhibition or performance, and/or developing a new course, among other possibilities.
Collaborate with undergraduate students on research projects or curricular development through Brown’s Undergraduate Research and Teaching Awards (UTRA). MES undergraduate students are always eager for opportunities to work with faculty, to support their work, and contribute their insights!
